After the excitement of the Kickstarter campaign, we are back with more information about "Heroes." Thank you so much for your support! We will do everything we can to not betray the trust that we have been given.
Combat - a key aspect of "Heroes"
Developing the combat system for "Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Board Game" was perhaps the biggest challenge in this project. On one hand, we wanted to capture the spirit of the original video game, and on the other hand, we wanted to ensure that the whole game remained smooth. Combat can make or break a game, which is why we put it to the test frequently.
We increase space, we control time
The previous version of the combat board worked well both in terms of combat time and functionality, but it lacked a bit of space. After many internal and external tests, we decided that the most optimal solution would be to extend the board with an additional column. This change did not negatively affect the duration of the battles but enriched them with more tactical flavor and allowed for inventive maneuvers.
Tactics matter
The placement of units on the board is now even more important. Defensively deploying units in a corner can now cause them to run out of movement before even reaching the battle. Ouch!
The enlargement of the battlefield also affected the movement of units. To keep battles optimized, ground units now have three movement points.
With a larger board and an extra movement point for ground units, it is now much harder to "force" neutral units to attack a specific unit by blocking their way. In general, "blocking" units is no longer a common phenomenon.
Defense action
Player-controlled units also receive a new action - "Defense." This action increases the defense stat when the unit is attacked (marked with a token). This allows the unit to survive more often but in return, they can only counterattack for that combat round (they lose their activation).
A solid board - a strengthened battlefield
After gathering feedback from games played directly on the final prototypes, we also made the decision to “strengthen the battlefield”; in the basic game, we will include a solid, glued combat board made of thick cardboard, which will fold in half.
Heroes Orchestra
Now for something else - Jakub, our Lead Designer, recently visited Warsaw - the city with the largest number of backers of "Heroes III: The Board Game" in the Kickstarter campaign (thank you again!) and took part in the Heroes Orchestra concert. A prototype demonstration and talks with backers accompanied the event.
What do you think Jakub discussed with the conductor and orchestra members? ;-D
We recommend getting acquainted with the work of Heroes Orchestra as they’re truly doing the work of Angels:
