The dead rise to claim their rightful place at the table… Every day, we’re getting closer to the launch of Heroes of Might and Magic: The Card Game on Gamefound.
It’s time to unveil the artwork of the second faction available in the starter pack! Meet Necropolis: the dreadful domain of the undead. Some of these haunting illustrations may already look familiar, as you might have seen glimpses of them across our social media or on the campaign page itself. But this is the first time we’re revealing the complete lineup together, in its full, cohesive form.
Just like with the Castle faction revealed earlier, each illustration was created in-house, in collaboration with the Heroes IP team, reimagining the undead of Antagarich with a modern aesthetic suited for card gameplay. With Necropolis, our goal was to create a set of cards that feels haunting, intriguing, and visually striking on the table. Perfect for strategic masterminds that love this faction just like we do.
Beyond that, we’re working every day to adapt this beloved franchise into a strategic card game, staying faithful to its legendary roots while giving it a modern look and feel. With each illustration the artists tie this project together even more, balancing nostalgia and innovation, crafting cards that feel like they belong.
Let’s dive into the darkness and meet the units:
Skeleton
The classic undead soldier—stubborn and tireless. Their power lies in numbers, rising beneath stormy skies with blades ready for eternal battle. They are the frontline of Necropolis. Skeletons are swarm units in our card game: easy to deploy and expendable. However, with proper synergy, they can become an overwhelming force, especially when you take advantage of the stacking mechanics to overpower the enemy with sheer numbers.
Walking Dead
Imagine that peculiar feeling of walking down a shadowy hall and sensing someone’s presence behind you… You’d better run! Grotesque and mindless, the Walking Dead tumble through cold stone corridors, filling the air with rot and dread. The artwork captures the foul stench of undeath: flies buzz, blood drips, and a poor onlooker can only run for their life. In the card game, they are cheap, persistent bodies that spread their stench to deal damage. You don’t field them for elegance—you field them because they are a true menace.
Wight
Covered in rags and mist, the Wight glides through a cursed forest with outstretched claws, eerie and ghostlike. This unit plays a tricky role: every time it moves over another, it grows stronger temporarily, increasing its own power. Its passive ability rewards mobility and clever positioning. Think of it as a haunting ghost that hits harder the deeper it drifts into enemy lines. Hungry and ready to devour.
Vampire
Aristocratic and terrifying, this Vampire creeps from behind shattered columns, cloak illuminated by torchlight. Our artists did a wonderful job to present the beautifully haunting nature of this predatory creature. In combat, Vampires passively heal by feeding on the weak, because of course they do. Truly excellent units at sustained duels and maybe even some hit-and-run tactics.
Lich
The conqueror of death clutches his iconic staff beneath the moonlight, commanding a soon-to-be army of the undead. We love the ambience of this artwork, with the cold glow of the full moon and an eerie castle looming in the background. In-game, Liches are ranged casters with area-of-effect damage that requires a bit of luck… but somehow, they always seem to roll that one lucky die, don’t they?
Black Knight
An omen of impending doom. The Black Knight rides a ghostly steed through a burning forest, striking foes with his heavy blade. The armor is blackened, the Knight a true symbol of death. On the battlefield, Black Knights are one of the few units in the game that punish the unprepared: if the target doesn't have a retaliation token, it takes 1 bonus damage based on Black Knight’s size. That means the more of them you deploy, the more merciless they become. When you see them ride, it’s already too late for you...
Bone Dragon
The symbol of death, as well as one of the most iconic symbols of the entire Necropolis. A skeletal titan from beyond the grave. Our talented artists captured The Bone Dragon shrieking into the cold air, wings torn and bones exposed, ready to take off and wreak havoc. In-game, Bone Dragons are powerful airborne units late-game dominance potential. Whenever it's attacked, your opponent must reroll all their hit dice. It's not just hard to take down, it actively warps luck itself. Truly a nightmare to deal with.
A Core Faction Rises
As with the Castle faction, each Necropolis unit was created to be both visually striking and mechanically distinct. Each passive or active ability has been carefully designed to complement the artwork, emphasizing dread, decay, and dominance.
Necropolis draws deeply from the mythos of the classic Heroes games while embracing a darker, modern elegance through our partnership with Heroes IP team. It stands alongside Castle as one of the card game’s core factions, mirroring the timeless struggle between light and darkness.
The question remains: will you take up the noble sword of the Castle, or embrace the haunting shadows of Necropolis? And for those of you whose favorite faction is neither of these two—don’t worry, there’s still much more to come besides the starter deck...
